MTC's Virtual Field Trips

TURNING 15 ON THE ROAD TO FREEDOM

Available to view: October 31 - November 7, 2022

Grades: 5 - 12

Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom tells the inspiring, true story of Lynda Blackmon, who celebrated her 15th birthday on the Selma to Montgomery march in 1965. Jailed nine times before the march and badly beaten on Bloody Sunday, Lynda and her neighbors fought alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. to secure the right to vote for African Americans. She believed “A voteless people is a hopeless people,” and put her life on the line, non-violently, to prove that anyone can change history, no matter how young or powerless they seem. This virtual play features an ensemble of African American performers who bring the ‘60s to life on the stage through the soul-stirring music of the Civil Rights Movement.

THE HIP HOP NUTCRACKER

The Hip Hop Nutcracker is a contemporary dance spectacle by a supercharged cast of a dozen all-star dancers. With the freshest hip-hop choreography, a live DJ, and an electric violinist, this crowd-pleasing, and uplifting saga turns the original Tchaikovsky score on its head in the coolest possible way. Innovative digital graffiti and visuals transform E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story into a romance set in 1980s New York City. Rap legend Kurtis Blow is a special guest MC for this new holiday traditional celebrating love, community, and the magic of New Year’s Eve.

STUDY GUIDES

THE COLLABORATION

In 2020, Miami Theater Center, The Adrienne Arsht Center, The Moss Center, and Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs' Culture Shock Miami Program joined forces to form the new Miami-Dade Arts Education Collective. Despite the challenges of the pandemic and it’s ongoing repercussions, the collective has programmed two seasons of diverse artists across multiple disciplines – music, theater, dance, and visual arts.

In the 2021/22 season the collective is committed to providing diverse and high-quality arts programming to students, grades K-12. We seek to engage students by making arts performances available and accessible during the school year via online/virtual offerings instead of traditional in-person field trips. MTC continues to collaborate with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ (MDCPS) Cultural Passport Program to provide virtual content to their students and hopes to move towards in-person field trips in the Spring of 2022. As the fourth largest school system in the nation, MDCPS is comprised of 392 schools and serves 345,000 students. Located at the southern end of the Florida peninsula, the school district stretches over 2,000 square miles of diverse and vibrant communities ranging from rural and suburban to urban cities and municipalities. A truly global community in which district students speak 56 different languages and represent 160 countries.

We would like to invite you and your student to see all of our wonderful offering this school year!
