Miami, FL October 14, 2014 – Celebrating its upcoming 10th Anniversary, Miami Theater Center features “VOICES OF THE ISLAND: A CARIBBEAN FANTASY, written and directed by JOSHUA JEAN-BAPTISTE, and created in collaboration with fellow LAB 9 artist collective members RAYNER GARRANCHAN, EDSON JEAN, and MARIA CORINA RAMIREZ. The show opens November 7, 2014 and runs Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 PM through November 22in MTC’s SandBox, a 50-seat black box space, located at 9806 NE 2nd Avenue in Miami Shores.

 

This engagement is part of MTC’s 2014-2015 SandBox Series, which offers performing artists a five-week residency in which to develop, rehearse, and perform a new work. The SandBox Series is made possible by a $100,000 Knight Arts Challenge grant provided by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. In “VOICES OF THE ISLAND: A CARIBBEAN FANTASY,” audiences will experience the fantastical world of shamanic magic and a culture clash as an atheist government undermines an island society’s ancient mystical beliefs. The audience members will influence the outcome of the play as their choices drive the story through audience participation. The cast features ANARIDIA BURGOS, JOSÉ IGNACIO ELÓSEGUI, EDSON JEAN, ANDRES MALDONADO, RIIAH MITCHELL, SEAN MORIN, MARIA CORINA RAMIREZ, and MARQUISE ROGERS.

 

JOSHUA JEAN-BAPTISTE (Writer/ Director) is a recent graduate of New World School of the Arts and a founding member of Lab9. He holds a BFA in Acting and has recently plunged into playwriting. Previous writing credits include his short play, Plenty of Shrimp (Micro Theater Miami),and his original one-person show, Space Apes (Louis O’Gerittis Theater). Joshua is currently working alongside EDSON JEAN and 5K Productions on a 30-minute dramedy TV show set in Miami and entitled #Josh.

 

ANARIDIA BURGOS (Understudy for Isla) graduated from New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts. Her acting credits include: Kill It (Micro Theater), Black Latina (Urban Stages), and Girls Liberation Front (Fringe Festival).

 

JOSÉ IGNACIO ELÓSEGUI (Daak) is a professional voice over actor who has voiced a variety of projects, including shows, movies, cartoons, and public service announcements in both English and Spanish. After graduating from New World School of the Arts, he embarked on a world tour with ArtSpot Theatre. Additional theater credits include his one-person show, Who Are YOU?, History Boys, Spring Awakening, Three Sisters, Fabiola, The Drowsy Chaperone, Major Barbara.

 

EDSON JEAN (Papa) is an actor/writer/director and a founding member of Lab9. He holds a BFA in Acting from New World School of the Arts. He wrote, directed, and starred in The Adventures of Edson Jean (2013), which was nominated for an American Black Film Festival Award and chosen as an ABFF/HBO official selection. As an actor, he was most recently seen as Vin in GableStage’s production of Sons of the Prophet. Additional stage and screen credits include: The Donkey Show (Adrienne Arsht Center), The Glades (Fox/A&E), and I’d Kill for You (NBC/Universal). Edson is currently developing an independent TV show, #Josh, with JOSHUA JEAN-BAPTISTE.

 

RIIAH MITCHELL (Goon) was born in Pompano Beach FL and is a local recording artist. He has performed his music at a variety of venues in Miami, including The Stage. He was last seen in Peer Gynt (New World School of the Arts) and is making a professional debut in VOICES OF THE ISLAND: A CARIBBEAN FANTASY.

 

ANDRES MALDONADO (Kuzaa) received his BFA in Music Theater from New World School of the Arts. Recent theater credits include Plenty of Shrimp, Macbeth, Warsaw: The Musical, The Beaux’s Stratagem, Cabaret, Balm in Gilead, Antigone, and The History Boys. He has also recently played Eduardo in his own original one-person show, Final Statement.

 

SEAN MORIN (Goon) is a graduate of University of Miami, and has a BA in Theater Arts. Recent credits include Miami Theater Center’s original production, The Red Thread, as well as the One Minute PlayFestival at The Deering Estate, and Conquest to the South Poleat Man Research Theater Company. Sean is a professional improvisational actor and can be seen at various improv venues in Miami.
MARIA CORINA RAMIREZ (Isla) received her BFA New World School of the Arts and is a founding member of Lab9.  Her most recent theatre credits include Las Dos Hermanas (Miami Micro Theatre), Love at First Tinder (Miami Micro Theatre), Visiting Hours (New Theatre), Happy (New Theatre), and Extended Stay (The Project [theatre]). Her most recent TV credit is as “Penny” on NBC-Telemundo’s primetime hit series, Marido en Alquiler. She is currently filming another TV series at NBC-Telemundo that is set to air in January 2015.

 

MARQUISE ROGERS (Kupe) was last seen as Well in Tartuffe: Born Again as Well and The Project [theatre]’s Urban Apparel.
