TONY AWARD WINNER TONYA PINKINS TO PERFORM AT MIAMI THEATER CENTER’S 10TH ANNIVERSARY GALA ON APRIL 9, 2015

Mano Santa, the sensational Afro-Brazilian drum/dance ensemble that Ocean Drive magazine says “can take over a place like a hurricane,” will close out the gala evening with a show-stopping performance

Miami Shores, FL March 9, 2015 – Tony Award-winning actress and singer Tonya Pinkins will delight Miami’s philanthropic, arts, and business leaders with her remarkable talents when she performs a selection of Broadway favorites at Miami Theater Center’s 10th Anniversary Gala on April 9, 2015 at 7:00 PM. Located at 9806 NE 2nd Avenue in Miami Shores, MTC’s MainStage will be transformed into an intimate dining, dancing, and performance space to create a unique cabaret-style setting to celebrate this important milestone. The evening will culminate with a show-stopping Carnival-style samba show by the thrilling Miami-based drum/dance ensemble Mano Santa. Led by MTC Resident Composer Luciano Stazzone, the group has been seen and heard by millions worldwide, performing with Jennifer Lopez during the opening ceremonies of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and on Shakira’s single “Did It Again.” After Hours gala tickets, which include the performance, dancing, and dessert, are available for $75 per person. The After Hours portion of the evening begins at 8:30 PM.

The multi-talented Tonya Pinkins is best known for her celebrated role in Caroline, or Change and her Tony Award-winning portrayal of “Sweet Anita,” the spitfire chanteuse in Broadway’s Jelly’s Last Jam. She will co-star with Oscar winner Dianne Wiest in the upcoming New York premiere of Joel Drake Johnson’s drama, Rasheeda Speaking, directed by The Real Thing’s Cynthia Nixon. The multi-talented Pinkins has also appeared in several films in supporting roles, including Fading Gigolo, opposite Woody Allen, and Disney’s Enchanted. She also boasts a prolific television career, including her role in the 1980s as Heather Dalton on As the World Turns followed in the 1990s by her role as Livia Frye Cudahy in All My Children as well as recurring roles on TV hits such as The Cosby Show, Law & Order, Army Wives, 24, and Criminal Minds.

The black-tie affair will celebrate the passion and dedication of MTC’s Founder and Artistic Director Stephanie Ansin as well as her creative collaborators MTC Resident Artists Fernando Calzadilla and Luciano Stazzone who have played an integral role in the theater’s development. Since MTC was founded by Ansin in 2004 as The PlayGround Theatre (which was renamed Miami Theater Center in 2012), the theater has become recognized in the community and beyond for its vital role in producing high quality, cutting-edge original work and newly-imagined adaptations of classics as well as award-winning educational programs, bringing the transformational power of theater to people of all ages and abilities.

Kevin Miller of Wells Fargo and Juan Luis Betancourt of Gonza Executive Search, LLC will co-chair the 10th Anniversary Gala, and the Gala Committee Members include an esteemed group of Miami arts and business leaders: James Ansin, Sarah Arison, Geane Brito, Audra Cherry, Aaron Glickman, Edyth Goodman, Bryce Goodwin, Bill Jones, Sharon Lazier, Wendy Levitz, and Victor Lirio. Proceeds from the gala will support Miami Theater Center’s mission-driven educational and artistic programs.

A limited number of VIP tables and sponsorship opportunities are available from $500 to $15,000. Individual VIP tickets are available for $500 per person.
