MTC’S Resident Company , MAD CAT THEATRE, Presents Audience and Protest Writeen by VÁCLAV HAVEL, Directed BY Paul Tei and Theo Reyna FEATURING ERIK FABREGAT, PETE SMITH ROGAN, MICHAEL GIOIA AND NOAH

Miami, FL (January 2017) – Miami Theater Center’s (MTC) resident company – Mad Cat Theatre presents Audience and Protest – two plays by writer and philosopher, Václav Havel. Considered by some to be the one of the most important intellectuals of the 20th century, Havel – the last president of Czechoslovakia and the first president of the Czech Republic – was a pivotal force in Czechoslovakia’s Velvet Revolution. He was a human rights advocate repeatedly jailed for his dissent, and through his essays, plays, and memoirs, he sought to shine a light on the darkness of censorship and tyrannical rule.

Audience and Protest are the first and last of Havel’s semi-autobiographical Vaněk plays – a satirical trilogy – based on the playwright’s fictional alter-ego, Ferdinand Vaněk. Both plays are an examination of oppression and morale. Audience deals with a dissident writer recently released from jail for anti-government activities. Vaněk is stuck in the bleak office of the foreman of the brewery where he has been forced into menial labor. The tedious bureaucracy and constant paranoia of life under the Communists have driven the foreman to alcoholism and to the brink of insanity – he is prone to bouts of rage and despair. In Protest, Vaněk has escaped his hellish office to visit the middle-class home of Stanek – a friend and fellow writer. Stanek needs to sign a petition renouncing the regime and protest the arrest of his daughter’s fiancé, but once he discovers Vaněk has already started the petition, he begins to have a change of heart.

Directed by theater veterans Paul Tei and Theo Reyna, Audience and Protest will feature Mad Cat company actors Erik Fabregat, Pete Smith Rogan, Michael Gioia, and Noah Levine. Currently celebrating its 16th Anniversary Season – Mad Cat is MTC’s first official Resident Company. Mad Cat has become known as Miami’s irreverent, intrepid theater company that fosters new and local talent by commissioning and producing avant-garde shows, as well as works by celebrated playwrights. The company began presenting shows in MTC’s SandBox, a 50-seat black box space, in August of 2013. Previously, Mad Cat’s plays could be seen at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Carnival Studio Theater and subsequently at Miami Light Project’s Light Box dating back to 2000.

“Our goal is to further establish MTC as a premier hub for innovative theater and culture in the heart of Miami Shores, and I am delighted that Mad Cat is part of the MTC family,” says said Stephanie Ansin, MTC’s Founder and Artistic Director. “We share a passion for artistic integrity and a commitment to offer South Florida audiences a brand of theater that cannot be found elsewhere in our community.” Ansin adds, “Mad Cat’s irreverent, intelligent brand of theater is vital to the South Florida theater landscape, and we believe this new venture will further strengthen MTC’s role as Miami’s home for original and cutting-edge work.”

MTC invites you to experience the “all-around mad genius” of Mad Cat Theatre’s director, Paul Tei, and his talented company members. As the Miami New Times says, “Mad Cat produces theater that is everything good theater should be: witty, intelligent, daring, and thought-provoking.”

Audience and Protest premiere in The Sandbox at MTC on February 23rd and run through March 12th, 2017. Show times are 8pm Thursday through Saturday, and 3pm on Sundays. Tickets cost $30.
