Miami, FL (April 2017) – Miami Theater Center (MTC) is proud to present Duologue with a Painting – an art installation of what appears to be a two-dimensional painting of a reclining nude figure, but is in fact a painted living, breathing, human being – none other than the artist himself, Fernando Calzadilla.

As guests arrive into the MTC SandBox, they will find the living painting between two columns in the center of the room. Positioned across from the painted, nude figure will be a chair. This seat is designated for members of the audience who would like to engage in a duologue with the painting. The painted figure – while remaining completely still – will then come to life and speak with whomever sits to speak with it through the microphone. The performance will go on for as long as the audience engages in conversation with the painting.

The artist deliberately chose to entitle his live performance Duologue rather than “dialogue” for ironic effect. Despite the conversation being audibly amplified in the presence of many – it will only be between himself as the painting and the one person who sits in the chair. Aesthetics, philosophy, and politics are all subjects the painting will be ready to discuss. If no one chooses to speak, the performance will continue on as a museum experience.

Additionally, a selection of Calzadilla’s paintings will be exhibited on the walls to either side of the installation. For over three decades he has been painting reclining figures, but he has never before exhibited. For this one-time, special occasion at MTC, he will finally exhibit some of his paintings for the first time and perform one of them live.

“I paint because I like the process more than the product,” says the artist. “Sometime around 2001, Unesco opened the program Intangible Heritage to save cultural expressions. I found the idea problematic to say the least. I believe culture is living and cannot and should not be stored… as a reaction, I began to perform my paintings to question gender and genre categories. Am I a painting of a female reclining nude? A sculpture, a male in drag, a performance art piece? Am I all of the above? Or am I none of them?”

Duologue with a Painting, live art performance and exhibit by award-winning resident artist, Fernando Calzadilla, premieres on Friday, April 28th, and runs through Sunday, April 30th, 2017 at Miami Theater Center’s SandBox Theater. There will be two performances only – Friday and Saturday at 8pm; the exhibit is open to the public from 2:00 pm to 7:00pm from Friday April 28th through Sunday, April 30th. Artistic nudity to be expected. All ages welcome. Tickets: $25.
