MIAMI THEATER CENTER ANNOUNCES THE LINEUP FOR ITS 10th ANNIVERSARY 2014-15 SEASON featuring NEW VERSIONS OF TWO THEATER CLASSICS:

“HEDDA GABLER” and “THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH”

Miami, FL September 15, 2014 – Celebrating its upcoming 10th Anniversary, Miami Theater Center announces its 2014-2015 lineup, featuring newly imagined adaptations of two major theater works — Henrik Ibsen’s “HEDDA GABLER” (October 23-November 16) and George Axelrod’s “THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH” (February 19-March 15). Both will be adapted for 21st century audiences by MTC Artistic Director STEPHANIE ANSIN and MTC Resident Artist FERNANDO CALZADILLA, and directed by ANSIN. Costume, lighting, and set design are by CALZADILLA,with the original score by MTC Resident Composer LUCIANO STAZZONE. Performances will take place in Miami Theater Center’s Art Deco theater located at 9806 NE 2nd Avenue in Miami Shores.

Tickets to all MTC productions go on sale today in conjunction with the launch of MTC’s new website. (See page two for ticket information, show dates and times.)

A cast of Miami’s finest actors will bring their shared passion to “HEDDA GABLER” — the world theater classic about an uncompromising woman trapped in a compromised world. Playing Ibsen’s destructively dissatisfied, neurotic heroine will be JESSICA FARR, joined by LINDA BERNHARD (Understudy to Miss Tesman and Berta), JOHN DENNISON (Judge Brack), DIANA GARLE (Thea Elvsted), KITT MARSH (Berta), THEO REYNA (Male Understudy), CAROLINE SHANNON (Understudy to Hedda Gabler and Thea Elvsted), PAUL TEI (Ejlert Lövborg), GREGG WEINER (George Tesman), and KATE YOUNG (Juliana Tesman).

The stellar cast for “THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH” will feature actor and Socialmiami.com Publisher AARON GLICKMAN playing the lead role of Richard — the key man of a New York publishing firm — as well as LINDA BERNHARD (Elaine), JESSICA FARR (Miss Morris), JOE FERRARELLI (Male Understudy), DIANA GARLE (The Girl), BETSY GRAVER (Helen), and JAMES HOWELL (Dr. Brubaker). MTC’s adaptation of George Axelrod’s “THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH” is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

HEDDA GABLER” and “THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH” will offer audiences the unique opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the most complex, fascinating characters in the theatrical canon. Audience members will experience the shows from a 74-seat onstage seating riser facing the sleek, minimalist Miami Modern (MiMo)-inspired set that will be the centerpiece for both productions.

“I wanted to create new versions of Hedda Gabler and The Seven Year Itch because these two theater classics share common, universal themes of isolation frustration, anxiety, and entrapment that speak to contemporary audiences,” said MTC Artistic Director Stephanie Ansin. “Hedda Gabler is living in a ‘man’s world’ and struggling with feeling trapped in a dissatisfying marriage and the loss of the life she’s dreamed of, and Richard — the main character of The Seven Year Itch — is trying to escape from loneliness and the married life by which he feels stifled. I am excited for our South Florida audiences to experience our new interpretations of these theater classics, and I think our community will respond to them very enthusiastically,” Ansin added.

The ANSIN-CALZADILLA creative duo astonished audiences and critics alike with their creative adaptation of Chekhov’s Three Sisters in 2012 and is anticipated to once again garner local and national applause with this season’s MTC MainStage offerings. MTC has become widely recognized for its high-quality, cutting-edge, original productions, as well as adaptations of theater classics that enrich the cultural life of South Florida. This season MTC celebrates its 10th Anniversary in the spring of 2015. A gala evening celebrating this milestone will be announced at a later date.

Also this season, MTC is proud to feature the MTC SandBox Series — the theater’s incubator for new work by the most promising, up-and-coming artists on the scene today — featuring “VOICES OF THE ISLAND: A CARIBBEAN FANTASY” by Lab 9 — an artist collective comprised of RAYNER GARRANCHAN, EDSON JEAN, JOSHUA JEAN-BAPTISTE, and MARIA CORINA RAMIREZ. The cast includes DEVON DASSAW, EDSON JEAN, ANDRES MALDONADO, and MARIA CORINA RAMIREZ. Additional programming for the SandBox will be announced later this season. The SandBox Series is presented with support from a generous Knight Arts Challenge Grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

“Truly creative communities like South Florida’s need spaces where talented local artists can develop and tell new stories. The MTC SandBox Series provides that by incubating and lending its stage for the works of talented, emerging voices,” said Dennis Scholl, vice president/arts at Knight Foundation.

In “VOICES OF THE ISLAND: A CARIBBEAN FANTASY,” audiences will experience the fantastical world of shamanic magic and a culture clash as an atheist government undermines an island society’s ancient mystical beliefs. The audience members will influence the outcome of the play as their choices drive the story through audience participation. The show opens on November 7, 2014 and runs Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 PM through November 22 in MTC’s SandBox, a 50-seat black box space.
