Miami Shores, FL April 6, 2015 – Miami Theater Center proudly announces Mad Cat Theatre Company, led by Founder and Artistic Director Paul Tei, as its first Resident Company. Currently celebrating its 15th Anniversary Season, Mad Cat has become known as Miami’s irreverent, intrepid theater company that fosters new and local talent by commissioning and producing avant-garde shows, as well as works by celebrated playwrights.

Miami Theater Center is excited to partner with local theater veteran Paul Tei and his talented company members to establish Mad Cat as MTC’s first official Resident Company. Mad Cat began presenting shows in MTC’s SandBox, a 50-seat black box space, in August of 2013 and since that time has presented four productions at the theater. Previously, the company’s plays could be seen at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Carnival Studio Theater and subsequently at Miami Light Project’s Light Box dating back to 2000.

“Mad Cat’s shows are a welcome addition to MTC’s productions, education programs, and the independent films we screen in partnership with O Cinema,” said Stephanie Ansin, MTC’s Founder and Artistic Director. “Our goal is to further establish MTC as a premier hub for innovative theater and culture in the heart of Miami Shores, and I am delighted that Mad Cat is now officially part of the MTC family,” Ansin added. “We share a passion for artistic integrity and a commitment to offer South Florida audiences a brand of theater that cannot be found elsewhere in our community. Mad Cat’s irreverent, intelligent brand of theater is vital to the South Florida theater landscape, and we believe this new venture will further strengthen MTC’s role as Miami’s home for original and cutting-edge work.”

“Mad Cat feels in its gut that our new relationship with MTC will create dynamic winds of change in our artistic community,” said Paul Tei, Mad Cat’s Founder and Artistic Director. “We are going to spark a lot of conversation.”

Mad Cat’s kicks off this summer with the company’s new contemporary concert series, Mad Cat Live!, featuring performances by esteemed local musicians who make up the Mad Cat Live band. The company has a long tradition of interweaving live music into its theatrical productions and several of its core members are trained musicians from such prestigious schools as Berklee College of Music and University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. Their first concert will explore Paul and Linda McCartney’s misunderstood masterpiece, RAM, in summer 2015 on MTC’s 330-seat MainStage at 8:00 PM. The evening will begin with a short lecture on the relevance and history of RAM, the only album credited to both Paul and Linda McCartney. A Q&A with the musicians will follow the evening of live music to discuss the impact of the music and to get to know the band.  The second engagement in its Mad Cat Live! series will be The Point by American singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson from December 4-6, 2015 on MTC’s MainStage. It is a musical play, featuring narration, and is designed for audiences all ages. All Mad Cat Live! concerts will be performed on MTC’s MainStage, located at 9806 NE 2nd Avenue in Miami Shores.

Mad Cat’s season of original plays will continue with Lazy Fair, a new comedy that explores the limits of greed by resident playwright Theo Reyna, in August 2015 in MTC’s SandBox, located adjacent to the MainStage. In 2016, Mad Cat will be back in the SandBox with a play (to be determined) in February/March, as well as the premier run of a new play, Gerald Ford Superfreak, written by Jessica Farr, Theo Reyna, and Paul Tei, and directed by Tei, in May/June. This production will be presented on MTC’s MainStage. Mad Cat Theatre Company will announce further details about their productions and concerts in the coming months.

Tickets for Mad Cat’s summer shows will go on sale in June, 2015, and may be purchased at www.madcattheatre.org or www.mtcmiami.org.

About Mad Cat Theatre Company:

Born in 2000, Mad Cat Theatre Company’s mission is to provide theater that provokes its audience to reimagine its surrounding world; to promote debate by creating work that illuminates the darker regions of our mental and emotional landscapes; and to sniff out and ultimately create brazen stories that explore the hypermodernity of society. Mad Cat Theatre Company is committed to deconstructing itself and its environment through original works, adaptations, multimedia, live music, dance, puppetry, and poetry.
