FOR ITS 2015-16 SANDBOX SERIES,

A KNIGHT FOUNDATION SUPPORTED PROGRAM

“MTC’s SandBox Series is an incubator of art…”

– Christine Dolen, The Miami Herald

MIAMI SHORES, FL, November 18, 2014 — Miami Theater Center (MTC) announces its Open

Call to Artists in the theater discipline for its 2015-16 SandBox Series. This program nurtures

innovative theater artists by inviting them into an environment that prioritizes quality, rigor, and

ample time to engage in a challenging and rewarding artistic process as they develop and

present new work. The SandBox Series is made possible through a $100,000 Knights Art

Challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which aims to bring South

Florida together through the arts.

Theater artists are welcome to apply for the 2015-16 SandBox Series by submitting an

application with the following information: a bio; an artist’s statement; a written project narrative;

a two-minute video of themselves describing their project; and two short video clips of prior

work. The proposed project must be a new work, and applicants must be at least 18 years old

and eligible to work in the United States. Applications for the 2015-16 SandBox Series are

due by February 2, 2015 at 4:00 PM. To complete an online application, visit

www.mtcmiami.org. For any questions about the application process, contact Yolima De Avila,

MTC’S General Manager, at yolima@mtcmiami.org. The application and materials should be

sent to: Miami Theater Center 2015-16 SandBox Series, 9806 NE Second Avenue, Miami, FL

33138. Applications will be reviewed by a panel of theater professionals, and finalists may be

invited to present their project proposals in person at Miami Theater Center. The four artists

selected for the 2015-16 SandBox Series will be announced in the spring of 2015, and the

Series residencies will take place between October 2015 and June 2016.

Artists chosen for MTC’s SandBox Series receive a $5,000 commissioning fee, a six-week

residency, which includes 75 hours of rehearsal time and three weekends to perform six

showings of a new work in MTC’s SandBox, a 50-seat black box performance space. They also

benefit from production, marketing, publicity, and professional development support from MTC

staff.
