Miami, FL (September 2016) – Miami Theater Center (MTC) in collaboration with Mad Cat Theatre Company is proud to present Why Not? With Richard Nixon – a comedy written by company members Jessica Farr, Theo Reyna, and Paul Tei.

The playwrights initially created Gerald Ford Superfreak! for Comedy Central’s South Beach Comedy Festival in 2014. The show featured a Richard Nixon character who was such a sensation that they decided to write the hilarious spin-off Why Not? With Richard Nixon. The sensational political satire show first received a workshop at Jackie Gleason Theatre Backstage at The Fillmore on Miami Beach, as part of Mad Cat and More! Comedy Week, and will now be taking the stage at MTC this fall – just in time to get us into the election spirit!

From his house in Key Biscayne, Richard Nixon hosts a late night public access television show with the help of his best friend, Bebe Reboso, and his daughter, Tricia Nixon. They tackle the news of the day, struggle to entertain their audience, and Nixon interviews modern day presidential hopefuls in this colorful variety show filled with musical outbursts and heated interrogations – challenging his guests’ ability to lead the country as it stands.

Why Not? With Richard Nixon will be directed by theater veteran – and Mad Cat Theatre Founder – Paul Tei, and feature actors Noah Levine, Jessica Farr, and Cliff Burgess. Levine – the character actor known for his versatility in playing both comedic and dark dramatic roles – stars as Richard Nixon, while Farr and Burgess depict various roles.  Internationally buzzed playwright, stand-up comedian and actor, Farr, was called a “triple-threat” by The Miami New Times’ in her 2014 honorable mention in the annual Mastermind Awards – which honor the city’s most inspiring creatives. Actor and four-time Carbonell Awards nominee, Burgess, is best known for his role as Jack on the 2014 television series The First Five Years.

Currently celebrating its 16th Anniversary Season – Mad Cat is MTC’s first official Resident Company. Mad Cat has become known as Miami’s irreverent, intrepid theater company that fosters new and local talent by commissioning and producing avant-garde shows, as well as works by celebrated playwrights. The company began presenting shows in MTC’s SandBox, a 50-seat black box space, in August of 2013. Previously, Mad Cat’s plays could be seen at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Carnival Studio Theater and subsequently at Miami Light Project’s Light Box dating back to 2000.

“Our goal is to further establish MTC as a premier hub for innovative theater and culture in the heart of Miami Shores, and I am delighted that Mad Cat is part of the MTC family,” says said Stephanie Ansin, MTC’s Founder and Artistic Director. “We share a passion for artistic integrity and a commitment to offer South Florida audiences a brand of theater that cannot be found elsewhere in our community.” Ansin adds, “Mad Cat’s irreverent, intelligent brand of theater is vital to the South Florida theater landscape, and we believe this new venture will further strengthen MTC’s role as Miami’s home for original and cutting-edge work.”

MTC invites you to experience the “all-around mad genius” of Mad Cat Theatre’s director, Paul Tei and his talented company members. As the Miami New Times says, “Mad Cat produces theater that is everything good theater should be: witty, intelligent, daring, and thought-provoking.”

Why Not? With Richard Nixon premieres Thursday, September 29th, 2016. Show times are 8 pm in The Sandbox at MTC. Tickets cost $30.
